Celebration of INTERNATIONAL WOMEN IN ENGINEERING DAY 2020
The
Department of ICT under the Faculty of Science & Technology has recently
organized a two-week long astounding online event: ‘WEAVE’, in celebration of
the International Women in Engineering Day, which is on 23rd June, 2020.
The event was arranged by IEEE BUP Student Branch Women in Engineering Affinity
Group, one of the most prominent clubs of BUP which started its journey from
November 9, 2019. The purpose of ‘WEAVE’ was to encourage everyone to
contribute more in the fields of engineering and technology by providing a
platform for individuals to showcase their talent through some contests which
reflected qualities of critical thinking, designing and creative writing. The
contests were:
Problem-Solving (Based on a given
scenario)
Winner: Tashfia Sikder (BUP)
Runner-up: Jawaril Munshad Abedin
(BRACU)
Digital Artwork (Topic: Gender Equality)
Winners (Jointly): A. K. M. Mohaiminul
Islam and Lamia Habib (BUP)
Runner-up: Fahmida Islam (BUP)
Write-up (Topic: Your Weaved Dream)
Winner: Samia Islam (BRACU)
Runner-up: Sinhaj Noor (BUP)
The
event stirred such an unexpected response that 67 submissions were received
from participants of 21 different universities and 3 different colleges all
over the country, and even from Nepal, Australia and USA registered to join in
the event. Also, two online career sessions were conducted by Achia Khaleda
Nila, (Founder and CEO of Women in Digital) and Dr. Md. Hasanuzzaman Sagor
(Assistant Professor at the School of Electronic Engineering and Computer
Science in Queen Mary University of London, UK) to discuss technical career
skills and research workflows respectively. In both sessions there were almost
170 participants present. In conclusion of the first session, respected
Chairman of Dept of ICT, Lt. Col. A T M Mozibul Alam, psc, Sigs shared his
viewpoint towards the session. In the final part of the program, the results of
the contests were announced where the judges expressed their thoughts about the
submissions. After the session, respected Dean Brig Gen Md Zahidur Rahim, ndc,
afwc, psc shared some precious words of wisdom about the whole event.
Last
but not the least, it is a matter of great pride that the success story of
WEAVE was later featured internationally in the IEEE WIE Newsletter August
2020. The IEEE BUP Student Branch Women in Engineering Affinity Group is now in
the very first year of its course and is looking forward to creating a path of
progress that will inspire everyone to explore more in the fields of
engineering.
