Webinar on “Introducing Translanguaging as a Pedagogical Approach in Bangladeshi Education” arranged by the Department of English, BUP
On 30th October 2020, Department of English of Bangladesh University of Professionals (BUP) arranged a webinar titled “Introducing Translanguaging as a Pedagogical Approach in Bangladeshi Education”. Brig Gen A K M Iqbal Azim, ndc, psc, G+, PhD, Dean, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, BUP was the Chief Guest of the webinar and the Keynote Speaker was Abu Saleh Md. Rafi, PhD Research Fellow, James Cook University, Australia. Around 200 participants including the students, teachers and officers of the department attended the webinar through Zoom App. The webinar was arranged by the department with a view to informing the students about one of the latest developments of language scholarships named translanguaging which promises social justice and equal educational opportunity for all students. In the 21st century, it is often considered as the best way to educate bilingual students. In the webinar, the keynote speaker analyzed the prospects of translanguaging in the context of Bangladeshi education. The students learnt about the benefits of translanguaging pedagogies in Bangladeshi classrooms and got interested to conduct research work on this newly emerged area. Chairman of the Dept. of English, BUP, Dr. Fahmida Haque mentioned that Translanguaging pedagogies can enable students to flexibly negotiate meaning and develop deeper metalinguistic knowledge. This webinar will be of great interest to educators, policymakers and students in Bangladesh and related contexts.
