A campus poster rarely appears to be an environmental issue. It is usually a notice, an announcement, an invitation, or simply part of the visual life of a university. But what happens when we look at these familiar objects through the lens of ecology?
This question shaped the discussion at the seminar “Are Campus Posters Eco-friendly? An Eco-critical Discourse Analysis,” organised by the Department of English, Bangladesh University of Professionals (BUP), in collaboration with the BUP Literature & Drama Club, on 2 September 2026.
The seminar featured Assistant Professor Shakila Akter as the Keynote Speaker. The discussion approached campus posters not merely as tools of communication, but as cultural and material objects, opening up questions about paper consumption, waste, sustainability, and the environmental consequences of everyday campus practices.
By placing an ordinary feature of university life within an eco-critical framework, the seminar invited the audience to reconsider how seemingly small communicative practices participate in larger ecological realities.
The event was chaired by Dr. Fahmida Haque, Chairman, Department of English, and moderated by Sumaeta Marjan, Moderator, BUP Literature & Drama Club. The Chief Guest of the seminar was Brig Gen Md Sohrab Hossain Bhuiyan, BGBM, PBGM, ndc, psc, G+, Dean, FASS, BUP.
Following the session, Assistant Professor Shakila Akter was presented with a Certificate of Appreciation for her contribution as the Keynote Speaker.
The seminar offered a simple but compelling premise: sometimes, looking critically at the things we barely notice can reveal the questions that matter most.
