Biography

Asikunnaby is currently an Assistant Professor at the Department of Disaster Management and Resilience at the Bangladesh University of Professionals (BUP) in Dhaka, Bangladesh. He is presently on study leave to pursue a PhD in Geography through the Joint Doctoral Program of San Diego State University and the University of California, Santa Barbara, USA. His academic journey began at Jahangirnagar University, Bangladesh, where he obtained his BSc and first MSc (thesis) in Geography and Environment. He later earned a second MSc with a Distinction from Durham University, United Kingdom in 2020, focusing on the spatio-temporal dimensions of hazards.
Asikunnaby has been a faculty member at BUP since May 2016 and has amassed over a decade of interdisciplinary research experience. His work spans numerous projects in collaboration with various Government Agencies and NGOs, concentrating on disaster management, the physical environment, and livelihood dynamics in Bangladesh. Some of these collaborations include the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Ministry of Cultural Affairs, Bangladesh Planning Commission, Asiatic Society of Bangladesh, Center for Urban Studies (CUS), CARE Bangladesh, Start Fund Bangladesh, NIRAPAD, and Practical Action, Bangladesh. He is proficient in both quantitative and qualitative research methods. To address critical research questions related to hazard, resilience, food security, health, and climate change adaptation he employs questionnaire surveys, interviews, focus group discussions, GIS and remote sensing. For data analysis and visualization, he uses ArcGIS Pro, Google Earth Engine (GEE), and NVivo.
