"Urban Disaster Management: Challenges and Solutions" Workshop

The Department of Disaster Management & Resilience of Bangladesh University of Professionals recently participated in a workshop titled “Urban Disaster Management: Challenges and Solutions,” organized by the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief at the BIAM Foundation Multipurpose Hall in Dhaka. Led by two faculty members and accompanied by four enthusiastic students, our department’s delegation joined experts from renowned national and international organizations in critical discussions on urban disaster preparedness and management. Among the distinguished speakers, Dr. Mehedi Ahmed Ansary, Professor of Civil Engineering at Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), presented a keynote paper, shedding light on essential strategies and innovations in urban disaster risk reduction.

Faruk-E-Azam Bir Pratik, Advisor to the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief, emphasized the urgent need for robust early warning systems, advanced building codes, and comprehensive urban planning to mitigate disaster risks. Reflecting on Bangladesh’s vulnerability to both natural and human-made disasters, he underscored the importance of community awareness, innovative technologies, and a proactive youth role in disaster response. This exposure allowed our students to engage directly with these experts, deepening their knowledge and reinforcing their commitment to addressing urban disaster challenges.

Participation in this workshop provided our students with invaluable learning experiences, empowering them to bring innovative solutions to their studies and future professional engagements. We are optimistic that the skills and insights they gained will enable them to contribute meaningfully to the field of disaster management, both academically and practically.
