Guest Lecture on the Evolution of Bangladesh’s Engagement in United Nations Peace Operations Held at BUP

06 Aug 2026

The Department of Peace, Conflict and Human Rights (PCHR), Faculty of Security and Strategic Studies (FSSS), Bangladesh University of Professionals (BUP), organized a guest lecture titled “The Evolution of Bangladesh's Engagement in United Nations Peace Operations: Operational Experiences, Institutional Learning, and International Recognition” on 06 August 2026. The lecture was arranged as part of PCH 3629: United Nations Peace Operations for undergraduate students of the department.

Brigadier General Shahedul Anam Khan, MDS, ndc, psc (Retd.), former Chief Military Observer of the United Nations Iran Iraq Military Observer Group (UNIIMOG), delivered the lecture. Drawing on his professional experience, he shared firsthand reflections on Bangladesh’s early engagement in UN peacekeeping and the operational realities of serving in a United Nations peace operation.

The lecture provided insights into the evolution of Bangladesh’s participation in United Nations peace operations, including key challenges, institutional learning, and growing international recognition. Reflections from Brigadier General Khan’s UNIIMOG experience helped students connect theoretical concepts with the practical implementation of a UN peacekeeping mandate in a complex conflict environment and understand how early peacekeeping experiences contributed to Bangladesh’s institutional preparedness and international standing. The lecture concluded with an interactive session between the speaker and the students, followed by the presentation of a token of appreciation by the Dean of FSSS and the Chairman of PCHR.
