On 22 December 2024, the Department of Disaster Management & Resilience organised a pivotal study tour for the DMR-2021 Batch to the Rohingya Refugee Camp Camp-09 in Cox's Bazar. Led by Lt Col Mohammad Sarwar Hossain, psc, and guided by Lecturer Jinat Ara Nasrin and Lecturer Md Rakibul Islam, this day long visit provided students with valuable first-hand insights into the refugees' daily lives, their resilience and the emotional challenges of displacement. Assisted by the Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commissioner (RRRC), students explored the living conditions of refugees, observed the operations of healthcare facilities and engaged with educational and vocational training programs which, not only provides refugees with essential skills but also empowers them to become self-sufficient, fostering community growth and resilience. The education system is primarily funded by UNICEF and implemented by Mukti Cox’s Bazar. The students also witnessed how organizations such as UNHCR, IOM and BRAC collaborate to provide essential services, ranging from medical aid to skill development. Conversations with refugees revealed their emotional challenges and aspirations for a dignified return to their homeland. This study tour not only highlighted the critical role of humanitarian efforts but also reinforced the need for innovative and inclusive approaches to addressing displacement and fostering community development. Overall, this experience enriched the students’ empirical and practical knowledge that deepened their understanding of the ongoing crisis and the importance of sustainable and collaborative solutions for refugee welfare. It underscored the importance of empathy, collaboration, and sustainable solutions in addressing global humanitarian challenges.
